For this project, I found that by sitting at the piano with one of Helena’s photos placed where the sheet music would normally rest, I could literally write music to accompany the scene in front of me, as if the score were hidden inside the image. The process was almost immediate, almost like dissolving into the world and the narrative suggested by the photograph.
The first piece I composed using this method shares the same name as the photograph, 'Beyond The Frame'. Taken at Hestercombe House in Somerset, the music explores a mystical figure kneeling at an ancient window, fingers pressed against the glass as if about to be transported to the eerie world of dark vines growing on the other side.
